Gabby Petito news latest Brian Laundrie neighbour says family went camping days after he returned from trip

Police continue search for Brian Laundrie

Police searching for Brian Laundrie in the 25,000 acre Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County, Florida, continued the hunt for him on Wednesday, calling in dive teams and boats to assist the search. They are now calling on the public to help with the hunt. Mr Laundrie is considered a person of interest.

They eventually called off the search for the day tweeted that it will resume on Thursday.

Gabby Petito’s family slammed the lawyer representing the Laundrie family, demanding he remove photos of the woman from his Yelp page on threat of legal action and calling his statement after her body was found “disgusting.” On Wednesday, the FBI said that an autopsy has confirmed that the remains found on Sunday in a remote area of Wyoming were that of Ms Petito.

The Teton County Coroner ruled the death a homicide, though the actual cause of death is still being determined.

Earlier an eyewitness claimed she saw Brian Laundrie “acting weird” in the Spread Creek portion of the Bridger-Teton National Forest while she was vacationing in Wyoming. The woman, Jessica Schultz, tipped off the FBI to her encounter, which helped them narrow their search area to Spread Creek. Police investigated trail cam footage that potentially captured an image of Brian Laundrie hiking, but determined there was no connection.

Officers spent much of Monday searching the Laundrie family home and were pictured loading cardboard boxes into a van and towing away a silver Ford Mustang. His parents claim they have not seen their son for more than a week.

Police were tipped off to a potential sighting of Mr Laundrie, 23, near Mobile, Alabama, on Monday. They are yet to confirm if the lead was legitimate.

A witness has come forward to describe a stand-up argument between Brian Laundrie and a waitress at a restaurant in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, around the time Gabby Petito is believed to have sent her final text to her mother.

Nina Celie Angelo told Fox News she saw Mr Laundrie arguing with several female staff at Tex-Mex restaurant Merry Piglets between 1pm and 2pm on 27 August.

Mr Laundrie reportedly left and returned to the restaurant four times during the row, with Ms Angelo describing his body language as “aggressive”.

If confirmed, it would be one of the last sightings of Ms Petito alive, reports Bevan Hurley.

The exhaustive search for Gabby Petito’s fiance in a vast Florida wilderness entered its sixth day this morning.

A team of divers joined police and FBI agents using boats and helicopters looking for Brian Laundrie, 23, in the alligator-infested Carlton Reserve on Wednesday, but a spokesman said at nightfall that they had found “nothing” to show for their efforts, according to Reuters.

Authorities have not said why they are convinced Laundrie, who police call a “person of interest” in the case, may still be somewhere inside the more than 24,000-acre preserve near his home in North Port, Florida, more than a week after he told family members he was headed there to hike alone.

North Port police say Laundrie’s parents did not report him missing until 14 September, three days after the family last saw him. The Carlton Reserve has more than 80 miles (128 km) of hiking trails but is dominated by swampy water.

The body of Ms Petito, 22, was discovered on Sunday in a remote corner of the Bridger-Teton National Forest in western Wyoming, less than 1,000 feet from where, on the evening of 27 August, another pair of travel bloggers caught video images of the couple’s white Ford Transit parked on a dirt road.

In identifying her remains, Teton County medical examiners ruled Ms Petito’s death a homicide, but did not make the cause of her death public.

The search for Laundrie continues.

Shortly after Brian Laundrie returned home without Gabby Petito on 1 September, his family took a weekend camping trip, their neighbours in North Port, Florida, have said.

Charlene and William Guthrie said they saw the Laundries attaching a new camper to their pickup truck and go out of their house on the same weekend the police came looking for a lead in a missing persons case.

The Guthries were unaware of Ms Petito’s disappearance at that time.

“I saw them doing some work. And then when they prepared for their trip, I saw them loading the camper,” Mr Guthrie said, according to Fox News.

The relentless search for Brian Laundrie continues.

On Wednesday, even though the ground search for the missing boyfriend of 22-year-old YouTuber Gabby Petito was put on hold with police saying that “all the teams will be back tomorrow [Thursday] for a similar operation” â€" law enforcement sources have confirmed to 10 Tampa Bay that they are flying overnight, using thermal imaging to spot any signs of Mr Laundrie.

Experts said that this could be “crucial” in the search for Mr Laundrie claiming that “if he’s in there, the odds of finding him go up dramatically.”

A former FBI agent has said that Brian Laundrie could already be a “suspect” in the Gabby Petito homicide case without the public’s knowledge.

Mr Laundrie has only been named as a person of interest in the case.

RJ Toledo said in an interview with 10 Tampa Bay that “just because we haven’t been told he’s [Mr Laundrie] a suspect doesn’t mean he isn’t in the eyes of the investigators at this time”.

He added that “it could very well be [that he is]. Because there are these investigative and legal steps that need to be taken. There are reasons why a person can still be considered a person of interest and not formally be named a suspect.”

The former intelligence officer also said that the “arrest warrant could be in process, the arrest warrant could be imminent.”

Mr Laundrie was reported missing by his parents last week and police have been combing through the 25,000-acre Carlton Reserve in Sarasota County to find him.

Walsh, a victims’ advocate and the host of the TV show In Pursuit With John Walsh called the North Port Police’s sweep of Carlton Reserve a “red herring.”

“They spent all that revenue, looking for him now, a day late and a dollar short,” Walsh told USA Today.
